Club History

The University of Wollongong Underwater Hockey Club was founded in 1991, the year the Aquatic Centre opened. The Club is a stronghold for the sport in Southern NSW and runs an annual 4’s competition, attracting players from Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra and beyond. Since it’s inception, the Club has been represented at every State Championships – no other club has demonstrated this level of commitment. We have played in five State Grand Finals and were crowned State Champions in 1998, 1999 and 2002. The Club has developed a number of State and National representatives despite a modest annual membership. Eleven current or former club members have represented Australia.

  • Jane Davis – Silver in the 1992 and 1996 Worlds. Gold in 1995 Southern Hemisphere Competition.
  • Jenny Kennedy – Silver in the 1992 Worlds. Gold in 1995 Southern Hemisphere Competition.
  • Alison Hass – Silver in the 1992 and 1996 Worlds. Gold in 1994 and 2000 Worlds. Gold in 1993 Southern Hemisphere Competition.
  • Lena Plambeck – Silver in the 1992 and 1996 Worlds. Gold in 1994, 2000, 2006 and 2008 Worlds. Gold in 1993, 1995, 1997, 2007 and 2010 Southern Hemisphere Competition. Silver in Ladies Masters 2004 Worlds.
  • Sue Fyfe – Repr Spanish National Team 2001 at European Championship. Silver in Ladies Masters 2002 Worlds.
  • Martine Coupel – Silver in Ladies Masters 2002 Worlds.
  • Stuart Waters – Coach U21 in 1999 Southern Hemisphere Competition.
  • Dean Streater – Repr Australia in the U21’s team in the 1997 Southern Hemisphere Competition.
  • University Colours – Sue Fyfe 2001
  • University Blues – Jane Davis 1992, Alison Hass 1992, Sue Fyfe 2002.
  • Phil Ackerman – Represented Australia in the Masters team in 2006 and 2007
  • Sean Cleary – Represented Australia in the Masters team in 2007
  • David Kennedy – Represented Australia in the Masters team in 2007

Each year the Club fills the ranks of the NSW State Teams, with several Club members returning with medals from National Competitions. Achievement at these levels of competition requires commitment and dedication. Few University Clubs could boast such an impressive record.
