History of Underwater Hockey

Underwater Hockey History

Underwater hockey, also known as Octopush, was invented in 1954 by Alan Blake, a British diving instructor, as a way to keep his diving club members active during the winter months. The sport quickly spread across the globe, reaching Australia in the 1960s.

In New South Wales, underwater hockey has grown from a small group of enthusiasts to a thriving community with clubs across the state. Our players have represented Australia at World Championships, bringing home medals and inspiring the next generation of athletes.

Today, NSW UWH continues to promote the sport through regular competitions, training programs, and community events, welcoming players of all ages and skill levels.
